My introduction to Rogaining this past weekend was anything but gradual. I dove straight into the deep end with a 24-hour event. It certainly felt like a trial by ice (more so than fire!), but the experience was incredibly rewarding. Initially, it was planned as a trio with Ziggy, George, and myself, looking for a follow up to our GPT100 race. Unfortunately, Ziggy was sidelined by illness just days before, leaving George and I to tackle the course as a determined pair.

Instead of a standard written race report, I’ve captured the whole journey in a video, you can check it out below! Plus, as a bonus, I’ve added a list of key takeaways for future events.

Lessons Learned for next Rogaine

  1. Bring a proper cork board and table for planning
  2. Also bring plenty of stationary such as pens, highlighters and clear contact to cover the map once done
  3. Use pins and string with markings to roughly work out distances
  4. Mark out the route using a highlighter then cover the map in clear contact so the route doesn’t rub off
  5. Be quicker at route planning so there isn’t a mad rush at the end
  6. Pack your bags in the morning before getting the map so you’re ready to go
  7. Pack way more food than you think you need!!
  8. Bring lots of warm gear as well
  9. Plan like you are going to be out there for the full 24 hours, we were hoping to get back to the hash house for dinner but we were out for over 12 hours before returning
  10. Learn how to do various compass techniques, taking bearings, back bearings etc
  11. Learn how to follow a bearing using the map and compass, we mostly just navigated by the terrain and features, this is useless at night
  12. If you want to win, plan to get every control point
  13. Leave a few controls close to the hash house till the end for finishing
  14. Bring an alarm clock if you want to have a small sleep
  15. Ideally stay away from the hash house through the witching hours, sleeping is too tempting
  16. Don’t take it too serious, you’re guaranteed to get lost a few times, better to laugh about it than get annoyed
  17. Learn about catching features and handrails
  18. Sometimes the hard controls aren’t worth it
  19. Driving home afterwards is going to be hard, bring extra caffeine to get home safe
